Celebrant vs Registrar vs Humanist

What's the difference and which is right for you?

If you’re planning your wedding and finding yourself confused about who actually does what, you’re not alone.

This is one of the most common conversations I have with couples at the very start of their journey.

Questions like:

  • Do we need a registrar and a celebrant?

  • What actually is a celebrant ceremony?

  • Who can legally marry us?

Let’s strip it back and make it simple, no jargon, no pressure, just clear guidance so you can make the right choice for your day.

What Is a Registrar?

A registrar is a government official employed by your local council. Their role is to conduct the legal part of a marriage or civil partnership.

Here’s what that usually looks like:

  • Registrars perform ceremonies at a registry office or a licensed venue

  • The ceremony follows a set structure with limited flexibility

  • Religious, spiritual or symbolic elements aren’t permitted

  • You’ll often meet your registrar for the first time on the day itself

Best suited for:

Couples who want a straightforward, no-frills legal ceremony and are happy to keep things simple.

Think of a registrar as the person who ensures the paperwork is done; important, essential, but not designed to tell your authentic story.

What Is a Humanist Celebrant?

A humanist celebrant is trained and accredited by Humanists UK and creates ceremonies that are personal, meaningful and strictly non-religious.

What to know:

  • Ceremonies focus on your relationship, values and shared life

  • No religious or spiritual content is included

  • Ceremonies are not legally binding in England and Wales (they are legal in Scotland and Northern Ireland)

  • You’ll meet your celebrant beforehand and co-create your ceremony

Best suited for:

Couples who strongly identify as humanist or atheist and want a personalised ceremony without any religious or spiritual references.

Humanist ceremonies are heartfelt and thoughtful — but they do sit within a clearly defined worldview.

What Is an Independent Celebrant? (That’s Me)

An independent celebrant offers the greatest freedom of all.

I’m not tied to a belief system or legal script, which means your ceremony can be shaped entirely around you, your life, your journey and your love story.

What that gives you:

  • A ceremony written from scratch, based on your story, values and connection

  • Freedom to include spiritual, symbolic, cultural or religious elements; or none at all

  • Space for humour, emotion, ritual, family, children… even your dog

  • The option to marry anywhere that feels meaningful to you

  • Optional coaching support to help you feel confident, calm and fully present on your wedding day, whether delivering your vows or preparing for your ceremony or life as one

Best suited for:

Couples who want a ceremony that feels authentic, relaxed, deeply personal and truly reflective of who they are.

•          I don’t work from templates.

•          I work with your story, your energy, and what really matters to you as you step into married life, confident, grounded and connected.

So… Which One Is Right for You?

It really comes down to what you value most.

👉If legality is your only priority, a registrar may be enough.
👉If non-religious structure feels important, a humanist celebrant could be the right fit.
👉If you want freedom, meaning, emotional depth and a ceremony that feels unmistakably yours, an independent celebrant gives you that space.

🥂Your wedding ceremony isn’t just a formality.

It’s the moment you pause, reflect, and consciously choose each other, not just for the day, but for the life you’re creating together.
